The construction industry needs more apprentices to deal with growing demand. We have been working with the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) to demonstrate why building is a great career choice to help generate apprentice enrolments.
We assisted the BCITO with an exciting activation called ‘Not Your Average Shed’, where a talented group of young tradies built a ‘shed of the future’ in front of the general public at Sylvia Park shopping mall. We helped them to take this project into the home of every New Zealander by securing broadcast coverage on TVNZ’s Breakfast and TV3’s Story and through all other major media channels nationwide.
We have worked with BCITO to target secondary school students by publicising its Big Construction Tour where students get to visit sites throughout New Zealand. We are also promoting the Build-Ability challenge where secondary school students compete to build the best playhouse.
Our focus is to find stories and channels to appeal to a wide audience – both the parents of school leavers assessing the trades as a career, and school leavers themselves. In 2016 BCITO has signed up an average of more than 100 apprentices each week, and currently has more in training than ever before.
