Launch of the Data Futures Partnership's Guidelines for Trusted Data Use

The Data Futures Partnership is an independent group appointed by Government and exists to drive trusted data use and strengthen New Zealand's data ecosystem.

The launch of its A Pathway to Social Licence: Guidelines for Trusted Data Use is the result of extensive engagement with thousands of New Zealanders to understand how they feel about their data being shared in different situations.

The Guidelines help organisations build trust with individuals and communities around the ways they are collecting and using data. They include eight key questions organisations need to answer to help people decide whether there is enough Value, Protection and Choice for them to feel comfortable with how their data is used.

A key challenge for us was to distil the Guidelines from a technical research report into an engaging guidelines that communicates complicated concepts to businesses, organisations and individuals in an easily understood manner. We created tools to help achieve this including a ‘data use dial’ and ‘how to use’ flowchart.

We organised a series of media briefings in Auckland and Wellington to launch the Guidelines, encouraging journalists to question the Data Futures Partnership panel directly, which resulted in wide-ranging media interest.

This was supported by a social media campaign to extend the reach and engagement by encouraging adoption and trial of the Guidelines by organisations over the coming months.  This has resulted in significant uptake.

Media coverage included Stuff, NZ Herald, National Business Review, Reseller News, CIO, Computerworld and IT Brief.
